Executive Summary:

Responsible for implementing health plans for students who require continual health monitoring or procedures on a daily basis due to significant medical needs. Facilitate positive student responses to development; promote health and safety, including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; assist with case management services under the direction of the school nurse; and actively collaborate with others to provide a safe learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student medical matters under the direction of the school nurse and administration.

Provide health care for chronic and acute illness, as well as injuries, as outlined in student health plans.

Collaborate with the school nurse on the need for modifications to the students’ educational program.

Dispense student medication per health plan and school policies.

Care for tracheotomies as required by student health plan, if applicable.

Assist with student transfers from wheelchairs and repositioning.

Monitor student vitals as required by student health plans.

Maintain confidentiality.

Maintain accurate health records for students served, including Medicaid documentation as required.

Review medical orders with school nurse to guide the health care needed to assist each student to be safe and successful at school.

 

Qualifications:

Education

Minimum qualifications include being a registered nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). At least 2 years of experience, preferably with pediatric care. Experience with tube feeding, medication via tube, tracheotomies, diabetic care, and seizure disorders is preferred.

Communication skills

Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical to the success of this position. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals. The individual must have effective listening skills.

Technology Skills

Position requires the individual to be competent in information gathering through technology. The ability to communicate through technology is required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work environment is in the classroom. May periodically have moderate physical demands and may be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Transfers from wheelchairs will be necessary. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Generally, the employee works inside.

Other information

This is an hourly position that follows the school calendar. Assignment location may vary depending on student needs.
