EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The teacher is the educational leader in the classroom and will ensure that the Sioux City Community School District programs and curricula are implemented in a way that maximizes student-learning experiences. The teacher is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of all students within his/her teaching assignment. Consistent with the Department of Education and Sioux City Community School District policies, the teacher will work within an established framework for the delivery of educational services which support student learning. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the teacher will demonstrate a strong commitment to planning for improvement of student achievement.
Organizes and presents instruction in an instructional environment which helps students learn the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Develops and maintains long range and daily instructional plans. Prepares course objectives and outlines for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the District and state.
Uses a variety of teaching strategies such as group work, lecture, mini-lessons, exploration, questioning, discussion, demonstrations, audiovisual aids and other cooperative teaching techniques. Focuses learning on the next concept beyond that which the student already knows. Actively engages in co-teaching model with assistant director and co-plans instruction to maximize instructional time.
Uses a variety of formative assessment strategies and continually evaluates student's academic and social growth, using differentiated instruction to allow students to apply current knowledge.
Maintains records for student attendance, evaluations, report cards, discipline records, and documents required by the School Board or Department of Education using prescribed formats.
Maintains District inventory (instruments, risers, robes, dresses, tuxedos, shirts, etc.) including name, address, phone, parent/guardian of the user through a digital medium. This includes making sure inventory is returned and if cleanable, cleaned with receipt provided annually in accordance with Iowa “Ames Ruling”.
Makes provisions to be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms. Communicates with parents through a variety of methods or means in order to develop a positive reinforcement of interest in student's progress.
Maintains clear, firm and reasonable work standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check all students’ performance; uses oral, written, and other work products to check student progress; poses higher level questioning.
Provides feedback on in-class work to encourage student growth; regularly provides prompt feedback on assigned out-of-class work; affirms a correct oral response appropriately; provides sustaining feedback after an incorrect response or no response by probing, repeating the question, or allowing more time.
Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees.
Cooperates with other staff members in assessing and helping pupils address social, emotional and academic issues.
Attends scheduled professional development and makes use of materials and techniques that improve the educational program. Maintains professional competence through self-selected professional growth activities. Continues intellectual and professional development and pursues further education in primary academic discipline.
Participates in evaluating resources in order to deliver desired curriculum.
Supervises and maintains the building choral music library. Maintains current copy of all music in the choral library on a sharable excel document.
Coordinates selection, ordering, and purchase of vocal ensemble outfits with the Middle School Administration.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum qualifications include a valid Iowa teaching certificate, a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in music education or acceptable content area. Must possess proper state certification and licensure for position. Employee is expected to demonstrate continued professional growth specific to the program(s).
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical to the success of this position. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals and groups from all levels of the organization, including staff, principals, and central administration. Communication will include individual to large group presentations as well as written communications and reports. Individual must have effective listening skills.
ANALYTICAL and REASONING SKILLS
Individual must have a solid background in assessment and have the ability to interpret data, which may be very complex and varied. Must be able to apply assessment strategies and link assessment data analysis to school improvement, curriculum, and professional development.
TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
Position requires the individual to be competent in a variety of methods in research and information gathering through technology. The ability to present and communicate through technology is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Normal office physical demands. May periodically have moderate physical demands and may be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Generally employee works inside.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
